So which clan do we belong to, anyway?

There is some dispute as to the actual clan we belong to. One side contends that we are a sept of Clan MacQuarrie of Ulva, while the other says that we are part of Clan MacDonald. My brother James has assembled a fair amount of evidence supporting the latter theory, while the former seems to originate with Marjorie MacCreary's book in 1968. Our own genealogical information doesn't extend far enough back to definitively answer this question, so I have collected arguments from both points of view to help you make up your own mind:

MacRuari
MacQuarrie

My paternal grandmother had traced our ancestry back to the mid-18th century in North America, but she couldn't find any information about when our ancestors emigrated or where they came from in Europe. The best information we have suggests that they came from county Tyrone in Ireland.
